Hello
What does one do when the chkdsk run hangs up in the middle of the run? If
it will not contunue what is the preferred method of ending the run? I have
asked this question on numerous forms and discussion groups and have made
many google searches with no results. Thanks for your help.

Hanging can be a sign of one or more bad sectors which chkdsk is dealing
with. It might best wo sit it out anad allow it to finish. You could
cause more damage by trying to stop the process.

Try HD Tune(freeware) as you can see the SMART
information relating to the drive etc.

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

go to start, my computer, left click to open. On drive C right click, click
properties, then tools. Now click where it says error checking and click
check now. You will see a window with two check boxes labeled automatically
fix system error files. CHECK THAT and check the other box.
click start. Your computer will tell you that it has scheduled the check
disc process the next time it restarts so restart your computer and it will
perform a check disc but instead of stopping it will automatically fix bad
sectors because you checked the box telling it to do that. Cool, huh. This
should solve your problem. Let me know.
Merry Christmas, bright Winter Solstice and a happy new year

I have a Dell D820. I suddenly had corrupt network drivers (all of them). I
ran the latest Norton Antivirus and Adaware. They didn't find anything. I
ran the built in diagnostics which said I had bad blocks but it didn't seem
to have the ability to fix them.

I ran chkdsk with "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and
attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. It said I need to restart first.
I did and the first time it ran it flew by so fast I didn't have a chance to
see what the screen said so I ran it again. This time it made it 30% through
stage 4 of 5 (verifying file data) and replaced bad clusters on tdi.sys,
ndis.sys, shdoclc.dll, comsvcs.dll, one of my photos, a quicktime .msi and an
iTunes .msi and then it hung. So far its been 22 hours and still 30%. What
do I do? I can hear the hard drive in a repeated pattern of 5 clicks and
then a double click. The hard drive read light is solid.

What should I do?
