I have a W2k SP2 box that is freezing at about 4% of stage four of the
CHKDSK routine that is done on the system drive at startup. Any ideas on
what might be causing it? Also, I am experiencing freezing up when browsing
internet, using other program as well...has gotten progressively worse
during last 3-4 months.

Thanks,

Jason

My experience is that unless a machine is completely static,
the operating system tends to acquire a number of "scars" as
time goes by. These scars become visible either by the
machine freezing, crashing, or failing to perform certain tasks
for no apparent reason (there is, of course, always a reason!).

To protect myself against this sort of thing I always keep a
couple of image files, made with DriveImage: The current
file, and one that is two months old. I renew the files every
two months. About twice each year, when I cannot resolve
a system malfunction within an your, I drop back to the last
good configuration. This method saves me enormous amounts
of time. However, it relies on drive C: never being used for
storing data.

Your problem would be one of those where I would invoke
the previous image.

I also recommend that you keep up with Service Pack
releases. Win2000 SP4 was released a few weeks ago.
