When I run CHKDSK /R from the Windows Recovery console, I get the
message "chkdsk found and fixed one or more errors on the volume".
If I run it again immediately after I do not receive that message.
However, if I log in and log off Windows without running starting any
apps, then run CHKDSK /R from the recovery console I receive that
message. Why???
Running Windows XP with all service but MS stuff turned off.
Thanks

The drive may have failed. I'd download and run a disk diagnostic utility
from the drive manufacturer's web site.

If you are running WinXP, what are you doing asking in a Win2K News Group ?

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software
respective to your hard disk. After the test, you will know if the hard disk is bad or
not..

Quantum/Maxtor - PowerMax
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm

Western Digital - Data LifeGuard Tools (DLGDiag)
http://support.wdc.com/download/

Hitachi/IBM - Drive Fitness Test (DFT)
http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Seagate - SeaTools
http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/

Fujitsu - Diagnostic Tool
http://www.fcpa.com/download/hard-drives/

Samsung - Disk manager

Sorry, I'm new to these News Groups, didn't realize I was in the Win2K
one.

This is the second HD that I have tried. They both gave the same error
message. It is a Seagate drive and I did you their disk diagnostic
utility, but it did not find any problems with the drive.

you are close, very close but instead of going to
the recovery console , this time try it the same way
BUT click on start then click accessories then
click command prompt & type: chkdsk /f
then press enter & then answer the question with
'y' for yes & then reboot the computer.
let me know what happens.

I did see that once on a machine I was working on...
and ended up slightly underclocking the RAM and it solved the problem.

you may want to run a RAM diagnostic utlity however
