My last CHKDSK reported read, write errors then 72k of bad clusters.
What is the general procedure one should take regarding these types of
errors? Does this mean that the hd is on its way out? Is a call to
Dell support warranted? TIA

If chkdsk /r continues to report bad clusters almost every time you run it,
that is a sign that the surface of your hard disk is physically
deteriorating. Backup daily and replace the disk as soon as possible.

Thanks. Called Dell and they sent a replacement.
