We are conducting an accelerated lifecycle test on some WinXPE systems in which we are laying down about 40-50G of data per day in 800MB files. Part of our monitoring process for these systems involves running chkdsk without the /f switch. After the systems had run about nine days (completely filling the drives twice), we began to see reports from chkdsk regarding free space marked as allocated in the MFT bitmap and volume bitmap. We do not run chkdsk to fix these reports and find that the reports are not necessarily persistent. That is, from one day to the next, the report of the condition goes away. As far as we can tell, these conditions being reported by chkdsk have no consequences - no entries show up in the system event log, no detectable file problems, etc.. A search for information on the internet suggests that there may be some problem with chkdsk regarding its interaction with relinquished security descriptors
Can anyone provide technical information regarding the basis of these reports from chkdsk and any potential consequences?
