chkdsk command will not work

In dos the chkdsk command will not work and I get the following error
message "chkdsk is not recognised as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file."
How can I rectify this?

The cmd is:CHKDSK C: /F or/& try:CHKDSK /? If that fails,install xp cd,exit
the menu page,in cmd type:VERIFY ON Type:Sfc /Scannow When its thru,
type:EXIT Restart pc,remove xp cd,rerun the cmd back in xp...
