Hi All, I have a question about running chkdsk and defrag on a server after
it is first installed from RIS or CD. After I install Windows 2000 or 2003
server I always run chkdsk and defrag. There is now some resistance in my
group that running chkdsk and defrag is a waste of time. Is their any
information from Microsoft that this is a good or unneeded best practice?

The servers have a 4 to 5 year life before they are replaced and do not have
chkdsk or defrag run for the life of the server, only after the first install.

Any input on this would be great,
-Solomon

Can't see how it could possibly hurt to run chkdsk.
As far as running defrag on a new install...
what does the analysis say?
If it shows fragmentation...might as well run defrag too.

haven't installed any servers but i always do this on fresh installs before
installing the programs.
