My Chkdsk, will not run. error, says cannot
open volume. Just recently installed upgrade of AOl and
an upgrade of zonealarm. Found a Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article - 823439 that refers to this, but looks like
it has a date of 08/2003 and no solution. Any one have
any ideas. After it boots shows error message that
cannot access volume.

Ok, I am confused, don't I want it to run on drive C.

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. Then
type in:
chkntfs /x c: , and hit enter. Reboot your computer.

[This disables CHKDSK from running on drive C:]

Good Luck !

It's a known (Microsoft) issue, fix not yet available,
this is a workaround . . . at least, that's my
understanding . . .

Hi,

A full disk check cannot be done while Windows is running, you must schedule
it to occur when the system is restarted. Start/run cmd, type in "chkdsk C:
/r" (without the quotes) and hit <enter>. You will be told you cannot lock
the drive, and offered to have the disk checker run at a system reboot -
select "yes".

If the disk checker does not run, open a new command prompt, run "chkntfs
/d", then try again.

Like the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article says: "Microsoft is
researching this problem and will post more information in this
article when the information becomes available."

And according to Jerold Schulman - Windows: General MVP:
"There is currently no fix for this problem. When a solution
becomes available, Microsoft will probably release a hotfix, or
provide a workaround. If a hotfix becomes available, Microsoft
will include the fix in a Windows XP service pack. NOTE: You may
have success if you schedule Chkssk to run at startup and use the
/X switch, which will force a dismount."

My Note: I am certain that by writing "Chkssk" Jerold means
chkdsk.

The above quote is from JSI, INC_ - Tips & Tricks - Windows
Server 2003 - Windows XP - Windows 2000 web site:

JSI Tip 7079_ You receive 'Cannot open volume for direct access'
when Chkdsk runs during Windows XP startup
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBO/tip7000/rh7079.htm

Also, the Computer Technical Support Forums Web Site (reference
below) implicates 3rd party services and drivers. And while I
have not read any official documentation to that affect, it
certainly sounds plausible. Furthermore, I would certainly try
the "ANSWER FOR XP Pro USERS" (in my words):

Run msconfig. Select a Diagnostic Startup of Basic Devices and
Services Only. Use the method of your choice to schedule autochk
(the version of chkdsk that runs when you restart your computer).
And then reboot.

For more information about the GUI error-checking tool search
Windows XP Professional Help and Support Center Full-text Search
Matches titled: "Detecting and repairing disk errors".

And for more information about the command-prompt method "chkdsk"
(and the /x parameter) search the Windows XP Professional Help
and Support Center for the word in double-quotes and read the
Full-text Search by that title.

For more information about msconfig and the option: Diagnostic
Startup - load basic devices and services only, see the following

I had exactly this problem. I uninstalled zonealarm and chkdsk then ran on
reboot.

Richard.

Unistalled Zone Alarm. The new upgrade is apparently not
ready for prime time. Zone Alarm message boards are
aware of the problem. Chk disk, runs on boot now after
uninstalling. Thanks all
