* Can anyone explain the purpose of the chipset on the motherboard of a
compute ?

Any information or references appreciated

Thanks

A motherboard is a place where all the essential parts of a
computer are assembled or connected. Companies such as
INTEL design the chips and then sell chips to other
companies that make motherboards, such as ASUS or GIGABYTE.

A chipset is a family of chips that are designed to work
together.

Without a chipset, the CPU [central processor unit] is just
a chip.

A chipset is a series of IC chips which "controls" how each motherboard
component (CPU, RAM, drives etc..) can be accessed. We need s "driver"
installed so that XP can understand how to communicate to this chipset
correctly.

From Whatis.com
(http://searchsmb.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,290660,sid44_gci211781,00.html):

A chipset is a group of integrated circuits (microchips) that can be
used together to serve a single function and are therefore manufactured
and sold as a unit. For example, one chipset might combine all the
microchips needed to serve as the communications controller between a
processor and memory and other devices in a computer.
