I got my LCD TV from mwave then used it to watch the reports in the news
about various harmful products from China. The local paper had a recap of
harmful products, due to the fact that factories try to shave pennies off
their costs.

.. . . so, with the LCD for example, do we know if it is really all that
safe? For example, if they found some way to create the circuit boards,
flow the solder, etc. using harmful chemicals then . . . (you get the drift)
.. . .

or

Is everyone completely confident that all is 100% safe?

Is everyone completely confident that all is 100% safe?

The subject is exceptionally important IMO.

I believe some people are lulled by the misconception that his (or
her) government wouldn't allow him to destroy his own society. I'm
convinced that our current leaders couldn't care less. To me, choosing
the origin of products I buy is like voting with my money. Instead of
voting for the same old partisan politician, I use money to vote for
either democracy or communism. If we vote for communism too much, then
our government will be able to put the blame for the resulting
disaster squarely on us, saying "you were free to do whatever you
wanted, you could have chosen democracy but you chose otherwise".
People need to wake up. Sometimes there is no choice nowadays, but I
do pay attention and will pay a small amount more for a product made
in a democratic country.

The result could be something other than directly destroying our own
economies, I think the destruction of Democratic economies through
outsourcing and generally so-called globalism could lead to overt
aggression against others.

At the same time, don't believe the "globalism" garbage. Leaders of
the free world have and could have us trade amongst ourselves,
forever. Communist countries cannot compete, we've proved that
already. Globalism is probably just a way for the bigger companies to
beat up on the smaller companies.

Where do you live? In most modern locales, there are underwriting
agencies and organizations that will test and certify products, such
as UL, CSA, etc., for major appliances and these include LCD's. Also,
there are much more reviews than ever in publications, e-zines, etc.,
and very few flawed items gets by without being reported. While 100%
safety is a very good goal, humanity is learning all the time and
what may be perfect today could be deened imperfect in the future.

Perhaps you shouldn't gnaw on it, just in case.

very good points.

I read somewhere that we subsidize the amer. corporations that grow corn,
and after NAFTA, we exported cheap corn into mexico putting their
subsistance farmers out of work, so they came here as illegals so they could
feed their families. Your right, there are serious consequences to
governmental policies.

that's why 'globalization' will go unchecked until someone realizes that our kids in the
US are no smarter than the average third world kid, and this future 'world' dollar will
make the 7%, 20 times more powerful and richer. And 'America' land that we love, will be
no more.
California is already being geared up as a rich mans haven, and Mexico will supply the
servants. This so called housing boom in Cali, you know -where shacks sells for 700
thou., are not being bought by American dollars.. Bush has basically said screw what's
right and what the American people want, I'm the king, the head honcho, nobody is going to
tell ME what to do with MY government. He is a dictator, not a president.

(side note: while watching the morning news we were being told to watch our electricity
usage (because of the heat) while in the background of the shot was a 3000 new home
building project.....WTF is wrong with that picture?!)

The more 'rights' we give up for the sake of 'security' brings us one step closer.

Just like the pharmas, if there is big money to be made, you can be rest assured that our
'safety' is a secondary consideration.

1) What is 100% safe???????

2) Guess lots of people don't want foreign money in the US to
pay for the national debt via the buying of the bonds or
help finance the houses by purchase of the lending companies'
stocks/bonds/ etc.

3) of course, we need to keep foreign oil out!

4) also keep foreign food out to help the subsidise the corporate
farms; do without if not local grown.

5) keep all foreign products out as they are dangerous & not
100% safe; local products are 100% safe(?).

According to a recent Time Magazine (or one of the major magazine),
the number of recall on products from China was around 40% to 60% of
the total products that were recalled in USA. I don't remember the
exact percentage, nor which year the number was from. But that
percentage of products recalled doesn't seem to be out of line of the
percentages of products that we imported from China. The more
products that we import from China, the more recalls that we should
expect to see proportionally. I am not alarmed.

I am more worrying about the idea of globalization. In this world of
globalization, money can be transferred from one country to another
country to look for the highest return. But people have to stay where
they are. People in poor countries cannot go over the world look for
the highest wage. And people in rich countries see their jobs being
out-sourced. Seem like this arrangement is great for people who have
a lot of capital; but it is not great for labors. Oh well...

Owing money to communist countries is in fact a bad thing. The more we
owe Communist countries like China, the more influence they have over
us.
3) of course, we need to keep foreign oil out!

Bingo.

That probably was the ideal response to September 11, 2001. We should
have immediately begun a huge/massive effort to end our dependence on
foreign oil.

Our leadership missed a grand opportunity, but maybe we can still do
that.
do without if not local grown.

We have no problem growing our own food.

Some are dangerous, in more than one way.

Safer in fact. That's one difference between a democracy that is of,
for, and by its people, versus communist countries where workers and
ordinary consumers are treated like slaves.

If your money is sent to communist countries, it goes to their
dictators not to the workers, and your own workers become
impoverished.

Free trade isn't necessarily good either.

If we trade with another country because they have resources or crops
that we don't have, that's good.

If we trade with another country because their workers are treated
like slaves and paid peanuts (the money going to their communist
leaders), that's bad.

Yup. My 2 year old Chinese made microwave oven just burst into flames
the other night while I was heating soup. Already filed a complaint with
the proper consumer protection agency. But I don't have much faith that
it'll help.

Our current leadership, AKA "The Shrub",

Our current leadership means our current leadership, including the
administration, congress, leaders of the United Kingdom, and others.

Partisan politics is like globalism, dog eat dog, don't give a damn
about your country.
