Where and in what circumstances are you getting this, Jo? In an Access
database? If so in what context?

If not in Access, please repost in a forum supporting the program that you are
using.

Hi John I am getting in my access database. Its not all the time but today a
user was entering trying to enter data and chinese symbols were coming up
instead of english so they shut the database down and tried again and it was
ok. But when they went to enter another record so the chinese came back???
thanks jo

Hi Jo,

Some questions: Is this a shared database or is it only used by one
user? If shared, do other people, either on the same machine and/or on
different machines have the same problem? If a single user, does the problem
happen on a different machine? Is this a split database? Is the data stored
in Access or in some other type of system, such as SQL Server or Oracle?

Is this in a Memo field or a text field?
I'll await your answers to Clifford's questions: it's quite possible that you
have some database corruption, which can cause this symptom. MAKE A BACKUP of
your database, immediately - you may need it! - if you don't already have one;
and try Tools... Database utilities... Compact and Repair to see if the
problem goes away.

Right guys, the database is on our U:/drive at work where the user can open
the database. And the box they type in to is a a bound text box..
I shall do as you have suggested about the backup etc..
Thanks Jo

the database.

If it's a shared database with multiple users opening it directly... *run, do
not walk* to the database splitter wizard. This is a pretty strong recipe for
frequent corruption. You should have a shared backend containing only the
tables; each user should have their own copy of a frontend containing the
forms, reports, queries and code.

Hi john how do i do this? It seems to be happening on the users computer it
works ok on mine. I have tried the compact and repair and it is still doing
it. It is strange as we are both opening the program directly from the
u:drive but on his computer he is having the problem. Could it be just his
computer??

Hi Jo,

See Tony Toew's Auto FE Updater web page at
<http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/autofe.htm> for a useful tool to help with
the clients' front ends.

Also, I have seen the Chinese/Oriental character issue when Access
interprets plain 8-bit ASCII characters as 16-bit UNICODE. A strong
indication of a problem, including corruption. It sounds to me like the
problem is computer specific, so the database is probably okay. Here is
something to try. Have him go through the steps that you mentioned that
subsequently shows the oriental characters. Then after he quits, you go in
from your computer and see if the data in the new record is actually fine.
It could be a font corruption issue. Maybe deleting the font used by the
control from his computer and then reinstalling it, maybe with a copy from
your computer, would fix the problem.

Hi Clifford thanks for the help I shall do as you have advised, I also
wandered if it was his computer and I shall also check the font. thanks again
