Asking at rec.games.chess.computer might be better. But let me help you
out for now..

the following are just simple playing programs, no fancy database options
etc..

http://www.reubold.onlinehome.de/ - bringer, the inital interface is in
German, but you can switch it to english. To change go to "Ansicht"
scroll down to "sprache" and choose "Englische", strength is settable
,basic analysis options etc.

http://www.tim-mann.org/engines.html - Winboard, as Gnuchess built in,
and also allows internet play on free servers. Analysis mode available If
you are geeky, you can add more engines .

http://www.arasanchess.org/ -

More advanced stuff

http://members.home.nl/matador/chess810.htm - Dos version of Rebel 12,
perhaps strongest of the bunch, doesnt work on XP. Probably more options
then you need for a newbie.

http://www.playwitharena.com/ - Hard to describe this one, but it is
choke full of stuff including lots of computer vesrus computer testing
stuff you probably wont be interested in.

http://scid.sourceforge.net/ - SCID, Powerful database to look up games
played.

That's more then sufficent to start you off, I think.

Relax, it was just a signature. Besides I don't think pricelessware lists
chess programs.

Yes. It's just a general, gentle pointer for newbies, nothing specifically
against anyone. That's why it's in my sig.

At that site, the only current no-install version I saw was:
download Arasan 7.1 Winboard
executable + book only
What I got was a DOS screen, no program.

That's the winboard version which I use. If you want Arasan with full GUI
click on download Arasan 7.1 installer for windows.

I have an old Arasan that was executable.

Comment?

If you downloaded the WinBoard version of Arasan engine than you need to
download WinBoard program from http://www.tim-mann.org/chess.html.
OR you should download the Arasan (with GUI) if you don't want to
download WinBoard program.

I think the file size for Arasan (with GUI) should be more than 5MB.

A bit late, but this is also a nice little chess program:
http://www.reubold.onlinehome.de/

"Der Bringer" is a chess program for Windows, it is not public domain,
but you may download, copy, and use it free of charge."
German and English:
http://www.reubold.onlinehome.de/bringer/BringerV1_9.zip
download 1,102 MB -
(ARASAN 4,6 MB) http://www.arasanchess.org/
I also recently found this interesting page, about all the chess freeware
stuff you would want. Everything from the simple to the complicated tools.
