Attempted to run chekdisk, on Windows XPhome.
Allowed to run at next bootup, as expected.
At next bootup there was a message, as follows.
"Cannot open for direct access.
Windows has finished chekdisk."

The problem is that chekdisk has not ran, but the message repeats at each
and every bootup.
Any ideas about how to lose the message and to be able to run Chekdisk ?
This problem has slowed bootup time considerably.

Hi,

Boot the CD, enter the Recovery Console by selecting "r" at the prompt. Run
"chkdsk C: /r" from the command prompt.

If you have Zone alarm 5 on board that is most likely the cause. Visit the
ZA site for details on removal and if necessary the replacement with the
previous 4.5 version.

Richard.

Richard, thanks. I'll bet that is the problem. It hasn't been long since I
replaced Zone Alarm (free) with a new version , required at update.
Keeping my fingers crossed that I can go back to previous edition.
Seems that ZA would put out a fix for the problem. I've used ZA (free) since
day one and would really not want to go elsewhere for a firewall.
Again, thanks for the advice.

If you go to Zone alarm's web site and follow the links to the free version
and then find the version history you can download version 4.5 from there.
Do not apply either of the two versions 5 they both give rise to problems.

Richard.

Guess I should have waited for your most recent reply to continue.
I first went to the ZA site and downloaded a new version 5.0, then removed
the version already installed. Upon completion my chekdisk ran normally on
boot up. When finished I installed the new copy of 5.0 and refused the
option to load on bootup. If that does not work out I'll make a try for an
earlier version.
Thanks a lot for your continued efforts.

You should have no problems with Zone Alarm if you have the latest
version. I had problems with chkdisk and defrag when I first installed v5
of Zone Alarm but on the 23rd of June was offered an update which I
downloaded and installed and that cleared up the problems.
The version number is 5.0.590.043
