It's the new version (Sep 24, 2004)
Installed just now, it seems a fine application: anyone else tried it?

Cheez is a powerful, yet easy to use, image cataloguing tool. It's main
purpose is to help people with digital cameras organize, enhance and share
their photos and video clips. Of course it can be used for any kind of image
collection.

For every media file in your collection, Cheez can store any information
that you may enter (such as a description, a number of keywords or a date).
It uses a single text file (XML format) for that purpose, making backups
very easy. Searching is quite powerful and fast while other features include
editing, printing, slideshow, mailing, web albums, exif and many others.

[New features in v3.0]
The most interesting new features are video support, editing/enhancing
images, printing and mailing. Of course there are many other new things like
the Open With menu and the Add keyword function, plus you will find many
improvements in areas such as searching, sharing or viewing images.

Does it support any RAW file formats (NEF, CRW, ORF...)?

Thanks,

I downloaded and installed it. Cheez creates "thumbnails" of the
images in a subdirectory called Films. These thumbnails are
approximately 256kb in size (at least for the Kodak DC280 files that
it was mapping). So this thing is going to chew up a lot of space for
someone with a lot of files. It's also glacially slow in creating
these thumbnails. I never did see if it recognizes RAW files because
it wasn't 1/3 the way through reading the jpg's from the Kodak before
I killed the process.

It still needs a lot of work in my opinion. Picasa is MUCH more
useful, but doesn't read RAW files :<.

Does Picassa allow me to compile catalogs of my digi photos? Had a quick
look at Picassa but it seemed more like a simple picture viewer.

Cheez's thumbnails are stored in the Films.xml file located in the
installation directory. What you see in the Films directory are the
images themselves! Cheez uses a central location for *all* images and
it copies/moves every image there.

I know this approach isn't good on lots of occasions, but for many
people (including me) it's simple and tidy.

No RAW formats are supported (yet).

Dimitris (Cheez developer)
