checking of disk free space

My windows 2000 pro hangs when it tries to check the disk
free space. This happened when my computer was hit by a
power outage and restarted when the power came back on. I
had to reset my computer and skip disk checking just to
startup windows again. What is the problem here and what
is a good solution?
