I'm a bit surprised that in Vista some sort of constant mail checking is
missing...or i just can't find it?
OK, they done a good job by putting calendar in which quite nicely reminds
you even if you close it, but i'd really expect that mail checking would run
even if i close windows mail.
Again third party software will be needed...

Your ISPs Server stores all incoming mail, when you open your Mail
application it downloads them.

You can have the application check for new messages at your desired
intervals, by going to Tools > General tab > under "Send/Receive Messages",
check the following boxes:

Send and recive messages at startup
Check for new messages every 1min

Yes, the application needs to be open to do so.

i know. But these days when many people have constant internet connection it
would be nice that mail would be automatically checked every, say, 30
minutes.

and that's whole down side of it. Like MS outlook - it was always useless
program, because it needed to RUN in order to remind you for event. Vista's
calender is very usefull in this regard. I can' tbe THAT hard to make this
function...

Thats one of the nice things like about Entourage 2004 on the Mac, it
gives you alerts and notifications outside of the app on startup. Maybe if
you add Outlook and Mail to the Windows Startup folder it will be a bit
closer to what you want.
