checking if av s/w is working...

I have AVG installed (freeware version), but recently it displayed a
trojan warning (I stupidly did not note down the text of the message).
Anyway, I ran some other virus checkers (Trend Housecall, Spybot,
Spyware Blaster, and Bazooka ... and did not find anything.

Is there any way of checking that my installed AVG setup has not been
compromised or hijacked? (ie are there any benign test tools?)

TIA

You can get a copy of the EICAR test file from:

Did you check to see if it might have been moved to the AVG Virus Vault? If
so, it might have been neutralized and is no longer considered a threat and
thus it will not be detected by other AV's or spy/mal/adware programs.

Open the AVG, click on Program on the toolbar, then click on AVG Virus
Vault. This will show you what is in the vault that AVG has taken care of.
It there is anything in there, just delete it if you don't want it. Voila!

i think it might be better to get the eicar standard anti-virus test
file from the source http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm,
don't you agree?

I certainly agree with your statement. I had personally tested all
the files on the link I referred to and am still comfortable with
using them.

it's not so much just for the safety of the file that i prefer pointing
towards the source, but also for completeness of the supporting
documentation...

That is a good idea Kurt. I will keep that in mind for future
inquiries. Thank you,

Aaaahhhh ... all becomes clear. I checked, and AVG had moved something
called Downloader.Agent.T to the virus vault.
Many thanks !!!
