Is there a way of checking whether XP pro has installed
full USB 2 support for USB 2 ports, or just standard 1.
Device manager shows Standard PCI host controller. All
ports work, but I'd like to iknow if they are in "2" mode
or not!

Do you know for certain that your motherboard has USB2 ports? The magic word
you're looking for is 'enhanced' - standard is USB1. In order to enable USB2
support (assuming your motherboard is *definitely* USB2) you are required to
download two things - 1) SP1 and 2) an updated chipset driver for your
board.

FYI, just because you have USB2 support on the motherboard, doesn't mean
anything you plug into it will run at USB2 speeds - I have my ancient
scanner plugged into a USB2 port but, because it's 4 years old, it's only
USB1. The other thing I'm not sure about is cabling, as I've been told
conflicting information. Some say that a USB2 cable isn't necessary, others
(PC Format for example) say it is - I've yet to be given a definitive
answer.

There is no physical difference between a USB2.0 and 1.1 cable... the only
difference is the price some manufacturers and retailers would like you to
pay for it.

Just as I suspected..thanks my Las Vegasian friend..;o)

Happy Christmas!

The board is an Asus A&N8X-VM...definitely USB2, so I
assume that the drivers on the driver CD are OK. I'll
check the 'enhanced' from Device Manager....Thanks.
