So we lost our power and because of this our computer was shut off.
When we turned it back on this screen popped up:

checking file system on C:
The type of file system is NTFS
The Volume is dirty

CHKDSK is verifying files (Stage 1 of 3)...
48 percent completed

it's been at 48 percent for over an hour now
did it freeze up or something?
HELP!!

A power surge is perfectly capable of destroying the data on a hard drive. I
would download a drive diagnostic app, usually available on the drive makers
website.

Reboot the computer, let it start the check again and see if it gets past
it.
