Check For Update on Win XP

When attempting to run the "Check For Update" function from my XP SP2
machine, I always get the message "could not connect to the internet",
although internet is connected.
Same attempt from my Win 2000 machine runs OK.
(The Win 2000 machine shares the broadband internet link (ADSL) of the XP
SP2 machine, through a wireless LAN.)
Is that a known problem ? Is there a fix ?

The only time I have this problem was when I forgot to
set my proxy address in the IE config. Apparently it uses
that setting instead of redefining it in the tool.

We've seen this result when the download servers have been unavailable for a
temporary period. I'd retry.

I am not sure this is the case : update works fine on my Win 2000 machine
while it always fails on the XP SP2 one...

Interesting. You may well be right--I've seen a similar issue with the
"submit suspected spyware report" functionality. It works fine on my
machine most times, but sometimes I will get a transient error about the
Internet connection being down, check proxy settings.

However, on a clients XP Home machine, I believe running as Owner, this
error was instantaneous and solid--didn't look like it would ever work.
Don't know if this is a permissions issue, some service which isn't
functional, or what.

In fact I noticed that the scheduled update runs ok : the reported problem
affects only the manual update on the XP SP2 machine.
