Hello Don,

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
adinistrator.

Can you gº to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs?

There are many pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and
signature update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

For the benefit of the community reading this post, please rate the pºsts.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

I am an admin on the box.

I'll give that a try - won't make me popular with our desktop group as they
feel a need to control and distribute updates they have blessed but - what
the heck.

Thanks for the response!

Hi Don,

Description of Windows Defender definition updates
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/915597/en-us

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=906602

If your windows update is pointing to your local WSUS, then you must include
the Windows Defender in synchronization setting.

In Products selection, please include Windows Defender
In Update classifications, please include Definition Updates

You must synchronize the server and approve the definition for clients to
get the latest definition.

Good luck

Unfortunately they prefer to push the updates with Radia, EDM and whatever -
windows upate is disabled totally (I've attempted to override that and have
the ability to at least manually get updates).

This may be a sticking point with Defender - I think that not all companies
use either Windows update or WSUS - I am thinking that this should be clearly
spelled out as a prerequisite - i.e. "Windows Defender REQUIRES Windows
update or WSUS" - there IS no other way to get the signature updates.

BTW, I've applied all the updates I can find that apply to my system and
still get the same error.

You'll continue to get that error, I'm afraid. WSUS or access to
Microsoft's AutoUpdate servers is the requirement for update within the
program. The alternative is manual update via Windows Update.

Microsoft is intentionally not doing an end-run around your network
administrators--it is using the mechanism available on your network, or not
updating.

Windows Defender is not intended for use in a managed network
environment--for that, Microsoft Client Protection will be a better fit.

haven't got the new version of Windows Update working yet either - Error
number: 0x8DDD0018 - complains that one or more of Automatic Updates, BITS or
Event Log services are not running - and they are all running.

Start here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;883614

You might want to check the windowsupdate log"

Start, run, notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log
<enter>
Search on "server url" and see whether you are hitting an internal company
server, or a Microsoft server.

There's an omnibus Microsoft KB article on troubleshooting WindowsUpdate
issues:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602/en-us

It's a little long and involved, though. As a third-party alternative, this
one has helped lots of folks here:

Thanks Bill - getting closer (found that Automatic update service while
started, was set to manual) - now at least can get to the new windows update
page and see the Express and Custom buttons - but when trying the custom, now
get the 0xC8000202 error as I do when attempting to update from Defender.
Windows update log shows "DtaStor FATAL: Failed to initialize datastore,
error = 0xC8000202"

On my XP system Automatic Update is set to Automatic, and started. BITS is
also started, but set to manual.

the problem system is win2k, but I set them that way and that seemed to get
past the first error - now Defender update starts, then gives "Windows
Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024401b."
