Check Disk and Error Checking Problem

I'm having a problem with one of my computers that is
installed with Microsoft 2000 Professional. First of all,
I was unable to find "Scan Disk" that I thought would be
located under System Tools. Instead I found directions
through HELP to go to My Computer, then click on the drive
and go to properties. From there, to click on Tools and
then Check Now Under Error Checking. When I check both
the boxes under "Check Disk Options" it reminds me that it
cannot perform these functions with the computer running
and do I want it to run the next time I reboot. I said
yes, and restarted my computer. Now, when restarting, the
computer is checking the disk. Problem is, it's been
checking the disk now for over 4 hours. It's not locked
up, as it is moving, but extremely slowly. At one point,
I thought it had stopped, so I simply shut the machine
down. When it rebooted, I assumed it would get back into
Windows and it is NOT doing that. It simply started this
disk checking process all over again. What now? I want
to STOP this disk checking and just get back into Windows
but there is no instruction on how to do that. I've
checked knowledge base and am unable to find any support
for this problem. Can someone PLEASE help me?! Thank you
so much!

Hi Melissa,

Try restarting the system, pressing F8 at the boot menu, and on the Advanced Options
menu selecting Last known good configuration. Perhaps this will bypass the
scheduled Chkdsk operation (Autochk) and allow you to return to the system. If you
are able to boot into Windows, and you want to unschedule the chkdsk, you could try
using chkntfs to unschedule it. BTW, since you "simply shut the machine down" during
chkdsk I highly recommend that you allow chkdsk to run to completion.
