Hi everyone,

I ordered some CD's over the internet, and when opened one of
them I found that the little prongs in the middle that help hold
the CD in the case were all broken off and loose in the case.
The broken case is annoying but easily replaced, I was more
worried that the broken pieces might have scratched the CD.

I played it on my CD player, which is usually better at picking
up defects than the CD drive on the computer and it worked ok. I
tried ripping it to MP3's using CDex and it worked except for one
song which had two errors - I retried that song and it worked
this time.

The CD *seems* to be ok so I think I will just send the supplier
a note complaining about the damage but not requiring any further
action - they are usually quite good and I don't see any point in
making too big a fuss over a broken case, but it did get me to
thinking. Is there any program I could run that could check a CD
and tell me of any problems? If there were little scratches on
the CD that aren't affecting it at this stage, are they likely to
affect the CD in future (given proper handling such that an
originally 'good' CD wouldn't show problems)?

Nothing that a metal polish can't fix. I have rescued
completely unreadable CD's with a light polish. It
does not need much effort to remove scratches, and
of course work from the centre out. T-Cut works quite
well, too.

CDcheck is excellent for error checking of suspect CD's. Try at
http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/download.php
I always run it on newly created backups written to CD to ensure an
error free backup.
Was freeware util recently. However still freeware if used for personal
non profit use.
Cheers
