Check Box Will Not Work

I have a Word doc that was created by someone else. It has
check boxes in it to use when filling out the document.
However, I cannot get a check to appear in any of the
check boxes. Do you know how to troubleshoot or resolve
this problem?
 
If the check boxes are form fields, is the document protected for forms? If
they're MacroButton fields, have you tried double-clicking? If neither, it
may be that you're meant to print the form and fill it out by hand.

Word 2000. When I click on the box, a Check Box Form
Fields Options box appears and it shows that Check box
enabled is checked.
 
You need to protect the form (using the padlock on the Forms toolbar or
Tools | Protect Document) before you can use it.
