Tony!

It seems to play the new Deus Ex invisible wars game (and most likely
DoomIII etc).., I gotta upgrade from my geforce2 MX card.. (Tis a sad
day indeed)...

Looking to spend around or under $150

Like like the Geforce 4200 is a good choice...

but I was wondering what Nvidia and ATI cards would be the lowest
model that has T&L v1.1 or higher and/or may be a good buy for me
until someday when I win the lottery and can go nuts and buy a $500
vid card

Try to dig up just 50 $ more somewhere. Around 200 $ will buy you a Radeon
9600.

Get a 9600 Pro for ~$150 (I paid $170 3 months ago), a 9600XT for
~$200. The XT is a bit faster
I have a 9600 Pro (w/ AthlonXP @2200 MHz) and I'm playing Deus Ex IW
smoothly at 800x600 w/ 2x Multisampling and Bloom enabled. After
originally being disappointed with the performance (and gameplay) of
DX2, after the 1.1 patch and a couple of tweaks I'm pretty satisfied.

the geforce 4200 would be a good option (if you can
find one) but a radeon 9600 would be better if you can spend a little more.

What is Bloom??
It's a Deus Ex specific feature, though Prince of Persia seems to do
something similar. Adds a diffusion layer and enhances the light on
surfaces. Think old fashioned glamour photos. Some people like it
others don't, I think it looks kinda nice, 'tis optional and can result
in strange artifacting with multisampling > 1x.

Cheapest (from ATI) DX9 compliant card would be 9600SE, but stay away from
that since it sucks performance wise. Get atleast a regular 9600, or if you
can spend a little more Pro or XT. I think you can get 9600 Pro for about
$150...

I just installed an ATI Sappphire Atlantis 9600XT, but IMO its performance
is not quite
better than the Asus 5200. They are almost the same, while the Asus Ti4200
apparently
seems somewhat faster and better color on a LCD monitor.

At this moment, the Sapphire 9600XT gives me some disappointment. Reading a
lot before
making an experiment; but I must say reading on websites or newsgroups may
not help me
to find a card I want. The high-end cards are out of my reach by now.

Did you completely remove the nvidia drivers? If not, then try that and
then reinstall the ATI drivers and see if it helps.

If you can't get a hell of a lot better performance out of a 9600XT than
a FX5200 you're doing something incredibly wrong.

You stupid little brat!

Now listen good, it's only said for about 40 times!

You probably still have nvidia drivers installed, those load some
pesky files into your memory and cause the ati drivers to not fully
function!

So get down you!

Now remove those nvidia drivers.... do Start>execute... msconfig.exe
and remove the link to anything starting with NV

Download and install NFR ( nasty file remover ) and remove all left
overs from the nvidia drivers!

And re-install the ati drivers after the cleaning... and then you'll
see it for yourself.. the ATI card is much faster.

Now little brat go home and do those things and only dare to come back
if you failed or succeeded!

Or a FX5900/128 !!
Or a FX5700/256 (maybe, since they are all overpriced at the moment)
The FX5900 is faster, of course ( However, avoid the SE version and
avoid PNY ).

Remember to take a hard look at your processor. No point in
getting a fast video card for a P3/600, for example............

A great shame. You may want to give the Cat 3.10 drivers a try.

The Ati Cat3.10 drivers attempt to fix a whole lot of driver- problems
for many games ( The Ati-Emperor has had no clothes for a long time;
probably too busy optimizing for the non-existent HL2 ). Plus making
a belated attempt at OpenGL while staring down the barrel of Doom3.

Ati might get OpenGL working properly by Release #10 of
Version 4 of the Cat drivers :-) :-)

The XT also comes with a coupon for the new HalfLife2 game, which should be out in April-ish.
If you are planning on getting HL2 anyway (like myself), there isn't any savings by getting the
9600PRO, since the higher price of the XT is *more* than covered by the cost of the game.

Now I just have to decide between the ASUS version or the ATI version of the 9600XT. Any
suggestions?

I want to play DX2 and you must have a card that supports DX9 but
I bought a new card anyway. I got a MSI FX5200 128mb at newegg for
$94 shipped. There are other and better cards for that price but
what the hell. I like that Company, it supports DX9, and it comes
with a bundle of 11 cds. So what the f_ck!

If your results with the 5200 are similar to those of most who have
bought it then you're going to wish you had gotten a more capable
board--the 5200 has DX9 acceleration but the consensus is that it's so
slow in general that the DX9 acceleration doesn't help.

You know I just installed the card today and since I'm not into
"heavy" gaming I really can't tell the difference. I played Deus
Ex and I see some difference but not a lot. But I am happy about
the card so I can't complain. Also, I said I would never buy
a card that cost more than $100. But to each his own I guess.
By the way; Merry Christmas!
