You have to be kidding - check out staples -
you can purchase a new printer that comes with new cartridges
for $65.00 or higher -

Good luck -

The Australian dollar is higher than the US dollar (I am assuming you
are talking on the US Staples, BTW prices are similar in Canadian
Staples stores)

current conversion rate is $1AUD = $0.65USD

so it roughly equals out to $32.10 USD.

But printers in australia aren't exactly cheap. So the $65USD would really
be priced at $150AUD or therabouts, depending on the store.

Lived there - still can't get over the price differences.

so just out of curiosity, how much does a new epson stylus photo 1280 (ot
whatever it is there - 1290?) go for?

They're around the $920-940AUD mark at the moment (600-612USD). You are
right-it is the 1290 here.

Why would you bother with Epson at all? Correct me if I am wrong, but I have
read that all the latest Epson printers report when the cartridge is
empty.......... but if you refill them , the computer still recognises it as
an "old" or "empty" cartridge, and refuses to print with it ..... locking
you into buying a brand new cartridge each & every time you run out of
ink......!!! To make matters even worse, an independent study I read only
last week reported that Epson cartridges showed "empty" warnings when there
was variously between 17% and 34% of ink still left in the cartridge. This
makes Epson ink, milligram for milligram, as expensive as gold....... this
painful situation applies with the HP 5550 (and all future new printers)
too, so I will be sticking to Canon or Lexmark, thankyou very much.

cheers

That's one of the reasons I tended to lean away from Epson and HP - the
hassle of refilling the latest cartridges can be a pain. The Canon is so
much easier to refill.

Yes, but when printing photographs is the primary reason you buy a printer,
why go the cheap route and possibly comprimise image quality? Thats why I
stick to Epson (or MIS) inks.

Because some of us don't earn your 3 figure salary ;-) and have to find
alternatives that are just as good, but 1/25 the price of name brands.

If you look around, shop around, read around, you will find products
that will satisfy even the most demanding.

did I say i had money?

All my experiences with refilling and cheaper third party cartridges have
resulted in bad results, and a bad taste in my mouth so to speak. So, I
avoid third party inks..

sorry if i committed a crime ;p

I've not tried refilling my cartridges with my new printer, why? I've not
run out of ink, so therefore I've not had to bother.

NOW, I've only been in this country for 5 months, and therefore, I've not
had the opportunity to try a refill, but my previous Epson and Canon
experiences with refilling (18 months ago) weren't great. Maybe I did it
wrong, or whatever....

*shrug*

I might try - just not at the moment.

Give me places of reliable sources where I can get good inks from.. then
yeah, i might try.

Here in Canada I have been using inks (refill kits and bulk) from
atlanticinkjet.com I don't know if they ship to The Land Down Under.
It isn't specified on their website, so you'd have to check with them.

I like to print digital photos, CD labels, liners and inserts, greeting
cards, etc., so I go through a lot of ink. But since it only costs me
about $5 Canadian to refill all 4 Canon i850 cartridges (using bulk ink,
125ml size bottles), I can print freely without skimping and worrying
about costs. There is no way I could afford digital photography if I had
to buy genuine Canon ink cartridges - $125 (with taxes) Canadian for a
set of 4 when bought at my local store.

Taliesyn, I am glad that you enjoy your Canon and refilling and that it
works for you but I enjoy my Epson's and my OEM ink. I am not rich and
don't care to refill. I have the stains on my floor from when I used to do
it with my Canon a long time ago. When I figured in my time and aggravation
it wasn't worth the bother.
That is what is great about the inkjet industry. There are different
solutions for everyone to be happy.

I'm not in Australia anymore, I'm living in Maine. I moved here and got
married in april (after a long immigration process, but i digress)

Congratulations on both events. I'm still looking....... for a country.
(gotcha!)

Interesting you mentioned Maine because that is the US location of
Atlantic Inkjet, in Madawaska, on the northern border with Canada.
The Canadian operation is in neighboring New Brunswick.

Just a note in case you haven't read any of my earlier posts (others
have already heard it so I'm quite tired of repeating it). Using
Atlantic's bulk inks for the Canon i850, I reprinted a photo that had
been done earlier using Canon inks. The results were identical to my
standard set of eyes. Of course, I can't tell you how long either of
them will last without fading. I let you know in a few years.... ;-)

Unless your "Mr. Bean", why is there ink on the floor!!!!

When filling my Canon i850 cartridges, if I'm lucky... actually,
if I'm careless, I'll get a couple of drops on a finger or two from
touching the syringe. I just attach the original break-off cap to the
exit hole with rubber bands, drill a 1/16th hole at the top back,
syringe in ink until it's 90% full (cartridges are clear so you can
tell), insert #2-56 set screw to seal, and store or insert in printer.
It's not rocket science. It only takes about 3 minutes max to fill a
cartridge, and over an hour to cut the grass. Now *that's* aggravation!

-Taliesyn

From the ink oozing back out of the cartridge. As I said before if it works
for you great! I never said it was rocket science.

Canon cartridges as used on the i & s series printers are very easy to
refill. There isn't any reason why any mess at all should occur - at least
from the cartridge. A properly filled and sealed cartridge won't leak. Any
mess from the refilling process is caused by human error.

That may be and that is why I choose not to refill. I am not stopping
anyone from refilling just pointing out my experience.
