Has anybody actualy tried using one of these new cheap Linux machines -
7inch screen and only 2GB memory (in place of a hard disk) and inbuild
Office look-alike- to run Powerpoint presentations on the road with a
projector.

Sounds good if it will work.

Please share your experiences.

TIA
Chris

The OP asked about "Office look-alike" so I think he was referring to
OpenOffice.org, which will run in Linux. I think that one of the biggest
problems will be that the "Office look-alike" aren't exactly Office,
and I'll bet some of the fancier animations and other newer features
won't work properly. I bet a simple and plain presentation will work
just fine, but I'm just guessing as I have no experience with this.

Opening PPT presentations in Impress (OpenOffice / StarOffice presentation
program) will do odd things to gradients. I also find that it does odd
things to grouped objects sometimes. Trying to remember what else, but I"m
sure there are other gotchas. :-) Animations might be one.

Generally speaking, though, Impress should do okay. You'll probably want to
practice fixing glitches in it, because sometimes those can take awhile just
because of unfamiliarity with Impress.

Indeed Steve, I have already got one of the Windows machines that you
mention - but they are about twice the price of the Linux ones. From what
you all say I probably made the right decision.

Thanks, Lucy. Something to consider.
Size is indeed an issue when travelling intercontentally.
A PC does have some other advantages though - can access my email and can
edit my presentations as I go. Oh and I don't have a Blackberry! Time to
update??

cheers

It has been my experience that you often get what you pay for, or in this
case, don't.

Two questions:
How much would botching the important presentation cost?
Is it worth the risk?
