Cheap LCD monitors - Are there any to be avoided ?

Are all cheap 15 inch LCD monitors "OK"?

I'm asking about cheapo LCD monitors for general purpose web browsing
and light document editing. For full-time use I'll shop for a bigger,
better monitor.

Some flat panel monitors are better than others no matter what the price
range. If possible for where you live, I suggest going to a store like
CompUSA, CircuitCity, or BestBuy where they have monitors on display
and working. Then you can compare different models side-by-side. What
might look good to me might not look good to you. It is such a personal
thing you're best off looking for yourself.

Whatever you buy, look at the Response Rate...12ms or less is good,
otherwise you'll get blurry moving images.
 
Shouldn't the question be "Are ANY cheap 15 inch LCD monitors "OK"?"

I would browse the "e-magazine" reviews and see if the various gripes
about them pertained to "my situation".

One thing to consider (if it matters to you) is the warranty. You'll find
that the cheaper monitors have a warranty that requires a higher number of
pixels to be "dead" before they'll replace it, while the more expensive
monitors will let you return it with fewer pixels.

If you want to gamble on never having a dead pixel or if this sort of thing
doesn't matter to you, cheaper will do the job, but if having a dead pixel
in the middle of the screen may drive you nuts, you might want to read some
warranties before you buy.

My impression is the 15 inch LCD monitors are on the way out and that
most of what is on the market at present are "end of the line"
clearance items. The prices of 17 inch LCDs has dropped to the point
where there is not sufficient price difference between them and the 15
inch models to justify the continued production of the 15 inch size.

The same thing happened with CRT monitors. As long as a 15 inch
monitor was $100 or more higher than a 14 inch they continued to
produce the 14 inch ones. But when the prices of CRTs started to drop
the price differential dropped and when it got down to less than $50
the 14 inch ones disappeared from the market. More recently the same
thing happened with the 15 inch CRTs as the price of 17 inch models
dropped so low that there was little price differential between them
any more.
