I'd appreciate any suggestions about which cheap (<$150) laser printer is
decent for low-volume apps. Info about paper/envelope handling, consumables
(e.g. toner refills). My old HP 1100 just ate itself after very little use.
I'm just looking for something that will give excellent copy quality without
any frills like networking or duplexing. Thx.

If you are happy with HP why not consider the Laserjet 1020 or 1022. You can
refill the cartridges but to do it properly requires a bit of skill and care.
Alternatively a second hand Brother HL 1430 or similar that uses the TN6600 or
TN3600 cartridge is a good choice because the toners are easy to refill and can
be refilled several times.
Both will handle envelopes although only one at a time I think?

You do not really want a cheap printer. You want a high quality printer
sold for a lesser price.

Did your HP1100 have the usual multiple feed problems? I would avoid cheap
lasers such as Brother or Okidata. It will cost you a lot for consummables.
I would look at getting a used HP 4 for around $50. A very reliable machine
that is easy to repair and the toner/drum unit is combined and very easy to
refill or buy a refilled.

The Samsungs are fabulous little printers if USB is ok.

I have had good luck with the Konica-minolta 1350 in office desktop
applications.
Often available with a rebate.

My neighbor just got:

$63.75 after the rebate. Seems to print just fine. And for a new laser, I
can't find anything cheaper!!

I have an older Lexmark Optra S which I got from EBay for the grand sum of
$14.50 ($50 shipping).... am still on the original toner, every operating
system under the sun seems to have no problems (driver wise) connecting to
it. It's shared on the LPT from my MCE 2005.... every other PC on the
network (whether running a 32 bit or 64 bit O/S finds it and prints to it
perfectly.
