chat software for web site

I know this is problem the wrong place for this question, but I"m not sure
where to turn to. My husband is in a band and they have a website published
in frontpage. We would like to add a chat feature that would allow a group
chat as well as private chats. I have found free and cheap ones that won't do
both and not much else. I found one but it was $500. Does anyone know of an
inexpensive alternative software for that?

CBOX will host what is called a tag board, which is
basically an open public chat. No private messages, but it
is free
