That depends heavily on what you are talking about. Some web based chats
require Java, whilst others work happily without. It really depends on
which one you are using. If the site in question is any good, they will
normally let you know what you require.

Alternatively you could use IRC, which is a client based chat setup. For
that, you would download and install a client (Windows users tend to opt
for something like mIRC - I'm a RISC OS user, so I'm mostly to be found
using !Lirc, but clients exist for just about everything out there). For
details of IRC, you can start at www.irchelp.org and go from there.

Oh yes, while I remember; it is not generally acceptable practice to post
enquiries like this across so many groups, especially as the topic isn't
relevant to some of these groups.
