This problem has vexed everyone in our office for over a year. After
searching the knowledgebase, a call to MS support proved useless. The
support person called us back and told us that an engineer said that what we
are experiencing cannot possibly happen. Let me explain.
I run Excel 2002 and Windows XP with 512 Megs of RAM.
I update the problem workbook with all underlying workbooks open.
The problem workbook contains literally thousands of charts on about a dozen
pages.
The vast majority of the charts are simple line charts and cause no
problems.
The problem lies with our horizontal stacked bar charts.
They have 9 series.
The charts in the workbook have actually been copied from a different
workbook, maintaining links to the original data.
The workbook contains links to 10 other workbooks.
The problem workbook is sent to clients after the links to all other
workbooks are broken.
The problem is that after updating the underlying data the horizontal
stacked bar charts do not update, unless the individual charts are viewed on
my screen. If I break the links without viewing the charts, and then view
the charts they are not updated. My workaround has been to scroll through
each workbook to view every chart before breaking links. Needless to say,
this is inefficient and prone to error.
The folks at MicroSoft denied that viewing a chart on my monitor should not
affect whether or not a chart updates, but there you have it.
I would be very grateful for help with this.
