Chart animation - now you can, now you can't ......

I realize that certain animation effects allow me to animate a chart by
series, by category etc. while some only allow "as one object." For
example, I can do more with entrance (plus) but not entrance (crawl in).

What is the rule of thumb? How can I tell who can do what by looking at the
list of effects after clicking "add effect?" Do the icons/symbols beside
the effect name give any hint?

Appreciate advice.

I've never noticed any sure-fire way to tell what animations will work [how]
with charts and what won't.

My own rule of thumb is, the simpler, the better. For example, I like wipes
for charts, but not spirals. Crawl in is simple, sure, but it also takes
quite some time, and so I think it's not generally great for charts. (Again,
just generally speaking.) But I don't think there's any real way to know
before you get into the effect options dialog and see what's available.
