I am prepairing a document, whenever i try and create a TOC, the Chapter
number is generated along with the associated page number of the heading, is
there any way to remove the chapter reference, and just keep the page number.
I believe that it has something to do with the "field codes", but i don't
know enough about them to try and resolve the issue.

Appreciate the Help

In the Page Number Format dialog box, clear the "Include chapter number"
option. Click OK.

To open the dialog box: Active the header/footer view, for example by
double-clicking the header. Then click the Format Page Numbers button on the
Header and Footer toolbar of Word 2003 or click Page Number | Format Page
Numbers on the Header & Footer Tools Design tab of Word 2007.

If the chapter number is an autonumber of the heading paragraph, then I
don't know of any way to omit it, but you can certainly get around it by
changing the layout to use separate paragraphs for the chapter number and
chapter title (the former being a Body Text level style so that it is not
included in the TOC).

I see I misread the question (shouldn't hit the NGs before coffee, I guess)
and thought it referred to a paragraph number before the chapter title
rather than the inclusion of the chapter number in the page number. If the
chapter number is part of the page number printed on the page (using the
"Include chapter number" feature), I don't see any way to omit it from the
TOC, but the chapter number could be added to the page number manually using
a StyleRef field, and then it wouldn't be picked up by the TOC.

have you formatted the page numbers to include the chapter numbers? Then
there's no good way around this IIRC.

"Folio by Chapter" is rather outdated today, so it might be a good time
to brood whether you really want this and why. If you must, you can put
the chapter number manually into the header (by way of a STYLEREF field)
and avoid the trouble with the TOC.

Well, I interpreted it to be a case of chapter/page numbering, but it isn't
100% clear from the original message.

Oh, I think you read it correctly! As Robert has posted, though (and I also
suggested), the workaround would be to include the paragraph number in the
page number manually (using a StyleRef field) rather than use the "Include
chapter number" feature.
