Hi ,

Are there any step by step and gotchas documents out there
that shows how to change the name of a Windows 2000
Server/Advance Server . [ I can find NT articles ]

Reason : Customers have named their servers with a _ and
they wish to upgrade but IE 6 SP1 has a "patch" that will
not allow computers with a _ to have persistant data
across sessions

MS01-055 Session Variables Do Not Persist Between Requests

Our product needs this feature so we now have to give a
proceedure/tool to existing customers who have a _ in
their DC names .

Also , if you change the computer name will AD
automatically reflect the changes ?

thanks in advance

To rename Windows 2000 server DC, you will have to add aditional DC ro your
network (if you don't already have it), remove AD from the server you want
to rename (dcpromo), rename the server and DC promo it again. That are
required steps. With Windows Server 2003 domain, you can rename DC.

Regards

Is there a way around it using an alias ?
If we could create an alternative network name for the
server (an alias) then the clients could
access it using this rather than the netbios name....
just a thought, might be completely wrong, not even sure
if this is possible !
