Changing Works files to Word files

My old computer only had Microsoft Works, so all my files
were saved in Works. My new computer has Word and I want
to pull up and transfer old files from my floppy disks to
a CD. However, when I try to pull up the Works files on
my new computer, it tells me it cannot open the file;
Windows needs to know what program I created it in. When
I go through the list of programs, Works is not one of
them. When I try to pull up the file in Word anyway, it
comes up as a series of y's and square boxes. If I try
to open up the old files using Notebook, I get my
original files, but they are full of boxes and other
symbols, so I have to go through each document and take
out all of the garbage.

All I want to do is look at my old files that were
created in Works!! Why can't Microsoft read these old
Works files or at least transfer them to Word
format????? The file type of these old Works files
are "File."

Any help would be greatly appreciated. As you can see, I
am "computer software challenged."

Works 6.0 Converter: For Works and Word Users
The Works 6.0 Converter converts word processor documents created in Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other versions of Works. Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and Word 2002, 2000, and 97 on machines running Microsoft Windows® 98, 2000 Professional, Millennium Edition, and XP.
Note You do not need the Works 6.0 Converter if you already have Works 6.0 installed on your machine.

The converter for Version 4 is built into Word. Make sure you installed it.

I don't know if you can make the earlier versions work on current Word versions.

This is what help says to do to install 4

1.. Close all programs.

2.. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

3.. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon .

4.. Do one of the following:
If you installed Word by using the Office Setup program, click Microsoft Office on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.

If you installed Word individually, click Microsoft Word on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.

5.. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Learn about the location of components in the installer.

Note If you installed Word from a CD-ROM, and you have mapped your CD-ROM drive to a new drive letter since you originally installed Word, run Setup again from the CD-ROM. If you are running any Word files from the CD-ROM, you must uninstall Word, and then install Word again from the CD-ROM.
