Changing Windows Standard font for printing

I would like to print to a Epson C86 printer from Windows XP in text only
with a font similar to Courier New, so all characters are spaced the same
distance. I have tried setting the drivers to Generic/Text but then the
printer will not print. In the program I am printing from you can not adjust
the font and I assume it uses the Windows standard font but can not seem to
change this.

Print to the Generic Text TO FILE "Printer" (set the destination in the
printer's properties)

Load the resulting file into Notepad or Wordpad. Wordpad would allow you
to add things like page headers and page numbers. You could substitute
other word processors if you like.

If you loaded into Wordpad, select all the text and change font to
Courier New

Print to the actual printer
