Hi all,

Is there any registry hack or some other way to
change the way Windows Explorer looks when
you first start it? It seems it always shows icons
and I would like it to start up in details mode.
Is this possible and if so how do I make it happen?

thanks,
charles.....

1st open explorer and set the directory your in to what you would like
then at the top click Tools/Folder options/view
then click apply to all folders...........ok your way out

check it

Why seek a registry "hack" when what you want is an option readily
available via Windows Explorer's own menus?

In Windows Explorer, set the view to "Details," click Tools >
Folder Options > View, and then select and/or de-select the additional
options that provide the specific view you desire. Then simply click
<Apply to all Folders>.

It doesn't solve the problem. It reverts to large icon view.

There is no place in tools/options that one can set view mode and
because what you and others have suggested does NOT work.
It defaults to large icon view. This has to be coming from somewhere
and I would assume some value in the registry has to be changed
to make the new configuration perminant.

I agree with ***charles. The steps outlined, when followed in the exact
order do not work. In particular, I did Tools|Folder Options|View to
show hidden files once. Tool|Folder Options|View will not rehide files
when checked. There are other examples I can cite. There's something
deeper that no one has told me.

This could be due to the number of folders. See if this link helps

What level of permission is your logon? Are you making these changes at
an Administrative Level? (assuming you are running one of Windows XP's
flavors).

If you are running Windows from an Administrative Profile or one with
Administrative privs try effecting the change from Main Explorer window
<click Tools > Folder Options > View> select Remember Each Folder's
View Settings. Then apply changes to all folders. Ok out Actually,
"Remember Each Folder's View Settings" is to permit setting different
views for different folders. It may fix things, it may not. This
setting comes in handy if you'd like to have the folder where you store
your digital photos appear as thumbnails while you view everything else
from detail mode.
