We want to change the hardware on our domain controller to a new one. The
old server has active directory and is the only single domain controller on
the network. Both using the same windows 2000, is there a link which can help
me accomplish this ?

thanks,

one way is to use info found in this KB
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263532

But I will not recommend. I'll do it this way:
1. Promote the new server to an additional DC for the existing domain, setup
DNS as AD integrated.
2. Make sure everything is replicated to the new server (files, shares, roles,
objects, GPOs, certificates (EFS recovery agent))
3. Point your clients to the new DNS server (new DC).
4. Demote the old server.

That's it ... in a big picture.

PS: before start ... make backups

hello,

thanks for the reply. we have already got the other server up as member
server and joined to the domain. how can we demote the domain controller and
transfer all teh roles.

thanks,

everything is done with dcpromo command. first you need to promote the
member server with dcpromo and then demote the old server.
But because I see you're new to AD .. I will recommend you to STOP right
now! Read some materials from Technet website (www.microsoft.com/technet)
about AD .. and then ask again.

have a nice day,

Is there a reason to remove the old server? Unless the hardware for the
existing server is being re-allocated, I would bring up the new server
as a DC using DCPromo, transfer FSMO roles, make it a GC, transfer (or
duplicate for redundancy) any services (DNS, DHCP, etc.) to that server,
and leave the existing server in place as a second domain controller.
It is always recommended to have more than one DC if at all possible.
You don't want to have to rebuild your domain from scratch if you have a
disaster and lose your only domain controller.

Here is a little documentation to review...
