It sound like you may have installed a pre-SP1 version of XP. At least SP1
is required to fully use drives over 137GB

also
cant access any of my old files what can i do

What kind of installation did you do? It sounds like you didn't do an
upgrade, but a clean installation.

i asked for an upgrade. is there anyway i will be able to use the other
files or will i need to format the drives and reload ?

OK, then please provide details on what you mean when you say "cant access
any of my old files." Can you not see the files in My Computer? Can you see
them, but they won't open? If so what happens when you try? If you get an
eror message, please quote it verbatim.

Is your problem perhaps this issue:

This is difficult to diagnose from a distance, but it sure sounds to me like
what I said in the first place is right--regardless of what you intended to
do or thought you did, you didn't do an upgrade, but a clean installation.
