changing to unread adds three lines to display

When I have a message that is unread I will sometimes read it and then mark
it as unread for later review. When I do that the display not only returns
to bold font, but it also then displays three lines of the content. It also
does this when Spambayes checks the message since it works pretty much the
same way.
Can this action be turned off?

You're describing the AutoPreview feature. You should be able to disable
AutoPreview from the View menu and/or the button on the Advanced toolbar.

Well, now I feel stupid! I only knew to make sure preview pane was unchecked, I
never paid any attention to auto preview.
Thank you. I'll sheepishly wander away now. . . . .

the setting keeps returning!!! I turn it off, leave that email box and then
return and the autopreview is back?
I use IMAP to open four email accounts if that is a factor.
Why doesn't it stay off?

You might try resetting the view that has the problem...go to View | Current
View | Define Views, select the view in question, and click Reset.

I am having the same problem with my IMAP folder views (always getting the AutoPreview feature coming back on), and the "Reset" trick did not work for me. I even tried defining my own custom views with AutoPreview off, but Outlook seemed to ignore the fact that I have AutoPreview off when I defined the view. Hmm... frustrating. Any more suggesions?
