I have winxp home edition and when I save a web page I get a different
icon than the generic (e) icon of IE. Open with dialoge box has the
recommended programs like IE, Word etc and always use the selected
program does open the icon in IE but the icon shape remains the same but
not to that 'e'.
How could I change it to the generic please?

Igno,

Is that a HTML file. Try this:
Type "regsvr32 /i shdocvw" in the Run box.

If that does not help, open Registry Editor and check here:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\DefaultIcon]]
(Default) should be "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,1"

Yes the files are HTML. In the Registry Editor, under [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\
there is .html and I don't find DefaultIcon anywhere. However against
..html the Default Data-value was OPERA.HTML and that I changed to
IE.HTML ---- I do not know whether I did the right thing or not? By this
no change occurred to the Icon that I have.
Running regsvr32 /i shdocvw did not do anything.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\DefaultIcon]
not
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html]

Or, Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Programs > "Reset Web Settings"

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe,1" is already there in
the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\DefaultIcon].
Again " Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Programs > "Reset Web
Settings" did not help.
------
I would like to point out here that I took a fix on (Restore the default
behavior for the Desktop IE icon from the site
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm)after its install when I move
the HTML file from the folder that shows a different icon to the desktop
it shows the usual generic IE icon and when the same file that has been
moved to the Desktop is taken back to the origional folder it again
changes back to the same icon! Incidently the folder in question is on
the Desktop.

Or, Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Programs > "Reset Web Settings"

Try folder properties in "My Computer" > File Types (tab) >
scroll down to "Internet shortcut" or URL > open properties
and click on advanced and browse to your chosen application
or icon. Also click on change icon and reference the same
icon chosen earlier. This will usually be the 'exe' program
file bearing the application name, but in some cases either
ico, icl, or dlls can also hold icons (ex shell32.dll,
moricons.dll). hope this helps.

Try http://www.familyradio.com/index.html

You might just like it!!

Igno,

Try this fix. This one sets IE as default browser, might fix the problem:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg
* Use this only if IE is installed in its default location [c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer] *
