Changing to Domain from Work Group

Steve

I have a machine with windows 2000 pro which in the Network
Identification the selection was for a workgroup when it
should have been setup to the network domain name. When I
try to identify the network I get a request for a user name
and password of someone with permissions to access the
network domain. When I put in the information it comes back
with a message a person with those credentials already
exists. I can find the network and mapped folders to it
from the network server, but I can't attach to the network
printers. If anyone can suggest how I can make the switch
from workgroup to domain name it would be appreciated.

Hi Steve

Right click my computer
click network identification
click on properties
then select the domain
you will have to type in the name of the domain you wish
to join.
it will then ask you for the user name and password for a
user that is authorised to let the machine join the
domain.

Hope this helps

Rob,

Thanks for the reply. I've been trying to do exactly what
you described but when I put in the user name and password
it tells me the person doesn't exist on the computer. I
can see their name when I go to the user list. I've even
tried adding a new user and it still doesn't help. For
some reason because the setting now is for workgroup it
won't let me attach the user to the server. Is there any
way to find the domain information for that workstation? It
shouldn't have changed, but hey stranger things have
happened lol. when in the network area where you tell it
what domain you want to join above it shows the user.server
name.com and above that it shows the computer name of the
user. it just doesn't seem to want to accept the domain
name of the workstation. Thanks again for the reply and if
you have any other suggestions I'd welcome them.

Steve

Hi Steve

The user that is authorised to join the domain is not
stored locally on the machine it is the administrator for
the domain which is stored in AD.

Can you access any of the files that are in the domain?
(You should be prompted for a user name and password)
