Recently, when i start word, the text line begins in the middle of the page
as supposed to the top of the page, and even though i have tried backspace
and the mouse to go back to the top of the page, this hasn't worked. Can
anyone be of help.

Many thanks

Two settings to check in a new blank document:

1. On the Format menu, click Paragraph. On the Indents and Spacing
tab, verify that Line Spacing is set to "Single", and that Spacing
Before and After are both set to zero. Click OK.

2. On the File menu, click Page Setup. Click the Layout tab. Make sure
that Vertical Alignment is set to "Top".

If either of these methods work, follow the instructions at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm to open the
Normal template as a file and do the same modifications there. Save
and close the file when you are done.

Both Luc and Stefan have pointed you in the right direction. The likelihood
is that vertical alignment is set to Center instead of Top. But note that
you do NOT have to find or open Normal.dot to correct this. Just open a new
blank document and, without making any other changes, change the alignment
in Page Setup, then click Default... and answer Yes. For more on changing
Word's default settings, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm
