Changing the number of Recent Documents

I've edited the registry key to change the number of Recent Documents
displayed.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"MaxRecentDocs"=dword:00000040

Whilst this does change the number of documents listed, the actual number is
not, as suggested, the decimal equivalent (64) of the value specified in hex
(40h).

I changed the value to 46 (70h) but the number of documents listed is 50-52.

Why is the number of documents listed different to the specified value?

Is there a relationship between these figures?

Why does the maximum number of documents in the list change? Presumably, as
new documents are added, the oldest ones are removed to keep the same
maximum number of documents displayed. Usually this figure is 51, but
sometimes it's 50 or 52. Why is this?

It depends on the TYPE of document as well, AFAIK.....
