Changing the file type name?

How can I change the file type name for MP3s in Windows XP?

If I go into Windows Folder Options, select the File Types tab, scroll down
to MP3, and click the Advanced button, I get a dialogue box which looks like
it should allow me to change the file type name. Indeed, it allow me to
change the file type names for quite a few files, but any changes I make to
MP3 (and I suspect certain other file types are similarly restricted), the
changes aren't saved.

Any idea what is up with that?

What are you trying to do?

If you are trying to change the file extension of one file, right click that
file and select Rename. Rename the extension.

I am trying to change the file type description, not the file type. If you
view a folder in Details mode, one of the columns is listed as "Type" and
contains a verbose description. For MP3 files it says "MP3 audio file
(mp3)". However, I don't need an explanation of what an MP3 file is; I just
need "MP3" for the description.

If you follow the directions I made in the first post, you will see the
interface which is supposed to allow users to change the file descriptions.
If you can edit it, please let us know what the trick is.

David,

What is the "localization description?" I can't find any reference via
Google on the Microsoft site. Thanks.

If you install the french media player it will be Le MP3. The description is stored in the media player file so it can be any language it wants without haveing to write the whole program again.
