Is there a way to change the subject that is sent to someone from the out of
office reply feature? I am using it so that when someone sends a message to
an account it automatically sends out a auto-response. Is there another way
of doing this?

You could use the Rules Wizard to create auto-responses. Of course you're
taking a big chance on significantly increasing the amount of spam you
receive if you do that.

Why is that? Do you mean because when we are spammed it would reply letting
them know that it is a real account?

What is the better way to do this? With the rules wizard or out of office
response?

Yes, that's exactly why. You'll end up on the gold lists very quickly
and once you're on those it's very hard to get off them.

Auto-responses are going to cause that problem regardless. The best way
to do it is to have a human being decide which messages get responded to
and which don't, though obviously that's labor intensive and may not always
be practical. The Out-of-office assistant is probably more efficient,
but as you observed more limited in its capabilities.

The one thing I am confused by is, what is the difference if the
auto-response comes from rulez wizard or from out of office message? Either
way messages received by me will receive an autoresponse, and if it is sent
to a spammer, the end result is the same, they know there is someone on the
other end, right?

Yes, either way you risk getting a lot more spam. The difference between
the two techniques aside from that is that the rules wizard is more flexible
in the response you can send.
From a spam standpoint there is very little difference between the two
approaches, however.
