Changing Server Name

I need to change the name of one of my servers. In building the server, I
inadvertently used a .org extension instead of a .local extension and this
seems to really be screwing up seek times (as well as some weird DNS issues),
especially when XP is used as a wrokstation.

Can someone lead me down the right path of HOW to go about changing a server
name (or at least the .extension partof the name) and also show me what
affect that will have on a workstations ability to connect.

Thanks!!

Well mark, im afraid only one option which is rebuilt the dc.

May I ask why? I do not have a very complicated setup here, and only 30 PC
workstations to support. I can easily go around to all workstations if
necessary.

What is the issue?

Thanks MB

it depends what you want to do what type of server it is...

A FQDN (DNS name) is build like: SERVER.DOMAIN.TLD

If I understand it correctly you want to change the TLD part from org
to local

If it is a stand alone server (not member of any domain) you can
change that in right-click my computer -> computername tab -> change
-> more -> change the primary domain suffix as you like. If you use
DNS then you would need to change the name of the DNS zone by creating
a new one. If you use DHCP you need to change the DNS suffix clients
get

If it is a member server of a domain ior if it is a domain controller
then you need to do a domain rename.
See:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/downloads/domainrename.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4a-c4b9-4031-b491-29839148a28c&displaylang=en

For starters, a domain rename is only possible when your forest is at
Forest Functional Level Windows Server 2003 and if it contains
Exchange, only Exchange 2003 WITH SP1 are supported! All other
situations do not allow or support domain rename! However, I’m not
sure about other MS AD enabled apps (like SMS, etc.)

The domain rename procedure is a procedure that affects YOUR COMPLETE
FOREST! I would think twice before doing it or before recommending it.
As a safe measure I would want to have a Disaster Recovery Plan
available to recover the forest if something went wrong. If all other
options are not available I would want to copy my production
environment into a test environment and test test test test.... I
would also test the Disaster Recovery plan to be sure it will work!

Hi Mark,

I m assuming you wanna change name of Domain controller. In order the change
the name of domain controller, you will have to rebuilt the domain
controller.
If the issue is different give litte more information

What is the role of the server, whose name you wanna change ?
Also which name you wanna change?
What actually problem you face in current scenario ?
I shall be able to help you to some extend
