Hi Guys,

Is there a way to chaneg the Win XP seril umber used for installation?

When i go to do validation it say the copy i have is not vaild as it was
installed by someone else with a non genuine copy. I have a legit copy but
need to change the serial number.

Is there a way to do this without reinstalling Win XP?

I did a google and found some info but none of it works.

Thanks

You can only change the product key if you have an identical SKU, otherwise
you will have to perform a repair install.

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

You need to purchase and a _legitimate_ retail or OEM full license
of WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CDs and Product Keys.

That's the thing I already have a genuine copy of XP and have had since i
got this PC. But when it was installed it was installed with a crap serial
number that is not legit.

If i try to reinstall, the installer says it can not continue because the
version on my PC is newer than what is on the CD.

May be time for a total reinstall... Not looking foward to it though.

You don't need to do a complete reinstall. Just make a cd with SP2
slipstreamed into your copy of XP. It is very easy to do. I like
AutoStreamer, but there are other methods:

I must be missing something here. Why, if you had a legitimate
license, would you have used a pirated Product Key to install it? That
just make any sense.

If i try to reinstall, the installer says it can not continue because the
version on my PC is newer than what is on the CD.

This error message arises because your current WinXP Pro
installation is at a higher Service Pack level than is the WinXP Pro
installation CD you're trying to use. You must either uninstall the
service pack(s) from the WinXP Home installation (not an option if it
came pre-installed), or use a WinXP Pro installation CD with the same
(or higher) service pack incorporated. It's quite easy to create an
installation CD with the latest service pack (SP2) slipstreamed into the
installation files:
