I plan on changing motherboards and switching to an Intel system from my current AMD system, but I will be using the same hard drive. Will XP auto recognize the change when I install the hard drive on the new board or will I have to do a reinstall and call MS for a new key? Thank you for your time....

You will have to do a repair install. The drivers required
to boot an AMD mobo and CPU are entirely different than
Intel.
You will boot the computer from the XP CD and select the
repair install option.
See Intel instructions

Chris

You will likely have to repair XP to re-enumerate all of the new hardware.
You will also need to reactivate, but this is easily accomplished.

Repair Installation:

You will also need to reinstall all of the Windows Updates.

Important data should be backed up just for safety.

Before doing the repair install, make sure that you disconnect the cable
modem or DSL connection and do not re-connect it until the XP Firewall is
enabled.

Hey Chris,

As others have stated, you will need to do a repair install first, I would
recommend especially doing it before allowing the new board and cpu to boot
into windows XP.

As for activation, will probably do over the internet just fine, if not it
will give you a toll free number to activate, takes about 5 minutes.

I am not quite sure exactly what prompts activation. I have made numerous
upgrades on my system since installing XP Pro, and had only been prompted to
reactive once.
This past weekend I installed new drivers for my video card, and it prompted
me to reactivate - go figure. No new hardware, just new drivers. It went
fine over the internet though.
